The landscape around the lakes of Commasaharn and Coomaglaslaw on the Iveragh Peninsula in Co. Kerry is one of the most important and best preserved prehistoric landscapes. Buried under blanket bog until recent decades and exposed on many of the thousands of exposed outcrops is one of the greatest collections of perhistoric rock art in Europe.

This photograph was taken on a day that started extremely wet and dark, even my best waterproofs provided little defence against the penetrating damp and cold. On these days, I never give up hope of something special and unique developing, particularly when the wind drives the low cloud across the mountaintops. Thankfully, the wait was not in vain and for about eight or nine minutes the cloud broke and a glorious spotlight of sun swept across the valley floor beyond this outcop carved with ‘Atlantic’ cup and ring art, dating to the Neolithic.

Although they are among the better preserved carvings of this group, they can be hard to see in the flat light of an undercast day, when the light strikes them right, though, they show up with remarkable clarity.

Print only on heavyweight fine art cotton rag paper with white border. Sizing relates to paper size.
