Misty Dawn at Newgrange with Brocken Spectre

from €100.00

Gallery Edition: Limited to 75 in series of three sizes on heavyweight fine art paper.

Artist Edition: Limited to 15. Large format fine art print float-mounted in wooden tray frame. Prices on request.

An early autumn morning at Newgrange, sitting above the mist on the crest of the ridge that runs along the course of the River Boyne.

In the air, heavy with moisture, the powerful sunlight after dawn creates a circular rainbow-like effect known as a ‘Brocken Spectre’, the centre of which contains the miniscule shadow of the camera. In more typical circumstances this would be the shadow of the person observing the phenomenon and it appears opposite the direction of the sun. Around the shadow is a ring, or halo, known as a ‘Glory’ which usually contains the colours of a rainbow. Often, the inner Glory is surrounded by a giant circular ring when seen from the air, only a portion of which is caught with the camera unless using a fisheye lens.

Newgrange is the most celebrated passage tomb in Ireland. It was built c.3,200BC and has become world famous for its Winter Solstice alignment where the rising sun on the shortest day of the year shines through a special opening above the door to light the inner chamber. On many of its stones are some of the finest carvings in the canon of megalithic art, including the iconic ‘triple spiral’ on its entrance stone and echoed in miniature inside the rear chamber.

Print only on heavyweight fine art cotton rag paper with white border. Sizing relates to paper size.
